At the end of the Creta\u00adceous period a cosmic cata\u00adstrophe occurred. A meteor\u00adite smashed into Cent\u00adral Amer\u00adica and, prob\u00adably due to contin\u00adental drift, enorm\u00adous volcanic erup\u00adtions occur in India (Deccan-Trapp). This is followed by a dramatic drop in temper\u00adat\u00adure with contin\u00adental icing and a drop in sea level. In the sixth mass extinc\u00adtion<\/strong> triggered by this, the dino\u00adsaurs disap\u00adpear \u2014 with the excep\u00adtion of the birds. The versat\u00adile mammals conquer the entire planet.<\/p>\n

The climate is about 4 \u00b0C warmer than today, i.e. subtrop\u00adical. The sea level is much higher than today, as are the oxygen and CO<\/span>2<\/sub> content of the air. The flora and fauna spread over a new land bridge between Africa and Eurasia.
