Even small chil\u00addren learn in kinder\u00adgarten that the evol\u00adu\u00adtion of life on earth took place in six days with man as the \u201ccrown at its top\u201d. The story is pretty, easy to under\u00adstand even for small chil\u00addren, but still wrong.<\/p>\n

How it actu\u00adally happened and how it can be under\u00adstood has been researched and discovered by science for 200 years, and since then new pieces of the puzzle of know\u00adledge have been added continu\u00adously, complet\u00ading our know\u00adledge of how life on earth has developed.<\/p>\n

But it is certainly not as if we know everything, or at least most, about the evol\u00adu\u00adtion of all living beings that popu\u00adlate this planet. But what we do know for sure is based on processes and laws that do not require super\u00adnat\u00adural forces or influ\u00adences, and it strengthens our deep convic\u00adtion that everything on this earth is of natural origin. We, that is the regional group of the Giord\u00adano Bruno Found\u00ada\u00adtion (gbs-Rhine-Neckar), a group of secu\u00adlar human\u00adists in the metro\u00adpol\u00aditan region, which has set itself the task of making the process of the devel\u00adop\u00adment of life on earth under\u00adstand\u00adable and compre\u00adhens\u00adible even for people who are not experts in this field.<\/p>\n

Our ideas about the devel\u00adop\u00adment of life were first put on a scientific basis about 160 years ago by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace, the basic features of which are still valid today: the theory of evol\u00adu\u00adtion<\/strong>. Of course, this theory, which deals with the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the vari\u00adous forms of life on earth, but not with the origin of life itself from inan\u00adim\u00adate matter, has under\u00adgone vari\u00adous adapt\u00ada\u00adtions and detailed changes over time. In prin\u00adciple, however, it has remained unchanged. It is summar\u00adised in two short sentences:<\/p>\n

  1. Hered\u00adit\u00adary changes in organ\u00adisms occur by chance through changes in their genetic make-up, e.g. during cell division.<\/li>\n
  2. These changes are subject to a selec\u00adtion process that gives the organ\u00adisms best adap\u00adted to their habitat a survival and repro\u00adduc\u00adtion advantage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The theory of evolution is not a hypothesis!<\/h4>\n

    To avoid a common misun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00ading: In common parlance, theory<\/strong> is under\u00adstood as an unproven asser\u00adtion or an idea of how a process or mech\u00adan\u00adism might work without show\u00ading that this is really the case.<\/p>\n

    This is not true of scientific theor\u00adies<\/strong>. On the contrary, for a scientific claim to first become a hypo\u00adthesis<\/strong>, there must be an explan\u00adat\u00adory model that can explain further processes, states or proced\u00adures inde\u00adpend\u00adently of the original process. Only with the repro\u00addu\u00adcible predic\u00adtion of previ\u00adously unknown processes and their confirm\u00ada\u00adtion does the hypo\u00adthesis become a theory<\/strong>. Such a theory is a system of scien\u00adtific\u00adally foun\u00added state\u00adments which serves to describe sections of real\u00adity and the under\u00adly\u00ading laws, to make prognoses about the future or to explain how a found final state has developed from known prelim\u00adin\u00adary stages.<\/p>\n

    A well-known example of a scientific theory is Albert Einstein\u2019s General Theory of Relativ\u00adity. Like the Theory of Evol\u00adu\u00adtion, Relativ\u00adity cannot be proven in general terms, but both would be disproved (fals\u00adi\u00adfied) by a single find\u00ading that cannot be explained by these theor\u00adies. Both are justi\u00adfi\u00adably attemp\u00adted continu\u00adously, but have not yet succeeded, which speaks for the qual\u00adity of these theories.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    This \u201cEvol\u00adu\u00adtion\u00adsweg\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    The project presen\u00adted here is an attempt to trans\u00adfer the unima\u00adgin\u00adably long period of 4 600 000 000 years<\/strong>, the age of the Earth, to a distance of just over one kilo\u00admetre. At this scale, one metre repres\u00adents 4.1 million years, or 1 mm corres\u00adponds to 4100 years, roughly the time that has passed since the Egyp\u00adtian pyram\u00adids were built.<\/p>\n

    Signi\u00adfic\u00adant devel\u00adop\u00adments or events in evol\u00adu\u00adtion (or fossil finds or other evid\u00adence of these devel\u00adop\u00adments) are marked by signs along this path where they are described.<\/p>\n

    The indi\u00advidual points of the path do not repres\u00adent the direct evol\u00adu\u00adtion from the begin\u00adning of life to us humans. Rather, they pick out fossil finds on import\u00adant devel\u00adop\u00adments and events from the large and intens\u00adively branched evol\u00adu\u00adtion\u00adary tree, which have strongly influ\u00adenced our world as we find it today, or without which we humans would not exist here on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Although by far not all signi\u00adfic\u00adant devel\u00adop\u00adments could be high\u00adlighted with their own sign, it is clear that the speed of evol\u00adu\u00adtion\u00adary devel\u00adop\u00adments has increased expo\u00adnen\u00adtially \u2014 events came in ever shorter intervals.<\/p>\n

    There have been dramatic cuts in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of life time and again, without any non-natural influ\u00adences being discern\u00adible. Of these cuts, which we call mass extinc\u00adtions<\/strong>, there were certainly count\u00adless. The most signi\u00adfic\u00adant six of them are specially noted on the signs. Accord\u00ading to our present state of know\u00adledge, most of them were caused by extreme temper\u00adat\u00adure fluc\u00adtu\u00adations within short peri\u00adods of time, although the reas\u00adons for these temper\u00adat\u00adure fluc\u00adtu\u00adations were very differ\u00adent. Examples are the increase or decrease in CO<\/span>2<\/sub> concen\u00adtra\u00adtion, the occur\u00adrence of oxygen in the atmo\u00adsphere, but also volcanic erup\u00adtions, meteor\u00adite impacts or contin\u00adental drift. The last of these major mass extinc\u00adtions wiped out the dino\u00adsaurs and many other animal and plant groups about 65 million years ago.<\/p>\n

    Whether we are currently at the begin\u00adning of a mass extinc\u00adtion again, we do not know. However, the undoubtedly meas\u00adur\u00adable rapid increase in the mean temper\u00adat\u00adure of our Earth\u2019s atmo\u00adsphere, which is not least caused by us humans, does indic\u00adate that this is the case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
